Huntington’s disease course opens at Stirling University for 2025
Applications are now open for learners from across Scotland, the UK and around the world for 2025 entry to a pioneering undergraduate module created in partnership with families impacted by Huntington’s disease.
Delivered by University of Stirling in collaboration with Scottish Huntington’s Association, ‘Huntington’s disease: an enabling approach to supporting families’ the course if aimed at health and social care professionals who work with clients from the HD community, including carers and young people growing up in Huntington’s families.
Learners will draw on current global research and practice in the field in order to provide improved care and support to people impacted by Huntington’s disease.
By the end of the short course learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the aetiology of Huntington’s disease and the range of symptoms experienced;
- Show a greater understanding of the genetic component of the condition and how this impacts those affected by Huntington’s disease and those who support them;
- Demonstrate awareness of the importance of individual life stories and be able to use this to develop supportive strategies for people affected by Huntington’s disease;
- Recognise the diversity of experiences of living with Huntington’s disease and how individuals and families adapt and live with the condition;
- Evaluate current approaches, interventions and services for the treatment, care and support of people affected by Huntington’s disease and identify best practice;
- Develop knowledge and skills to anticipate the evolving needs of people with Huntington’s disease and their families and be able to identify and evaluate available approaches designed for future planning.
The module begins on 15 September 2025 with a virtual one-day session, followed by 12 weeks of online learning and study. All learning will be delivered online and can be accessed at times to suit individual learners. Assessment is through a single written report.
