Work for Scottish Huntington’s Association

Founded by families for families, Scottish Huntington’s Association is the only organisation in Scotland dedicated exclusively to providing expert and personalised support for those impacted by Huntington’s disease.

We do this through a nationwide network of Huntington’s disease Specialists, Specialist Youth Advisors and a Financial Wellbeing Service that works directly with families to ensure they have the support they need to cope with the challenges of this devastating condition.

Our impact and approach are recognised at national and international levels, including for the development of the world’s first National Care Framework for Huntington’s disease; training and expertise provided to NHS and other medical, health and social care providers; our growing influence to support research; and flagship events such as our annual Family Gathering, Dance 100 and Firewalks. In 2024, our work to support the health and wellbeing of young people was recognised further at the National Youth Work Awards, hosted by YouthLink Scotland.

Join our team and help to improve the lives of families across Scotland in a role that enables you to share your expertise, build new skills, and feel valued by colleagues, clients and the organisation you work for.

A person talking to people

“Having started my career in the NHS, I knew that I was looking for a role that would enable me to engage with people more holistically. Working with Scottish Huntington’s Association allowed me to gain invaluable insight into the challenges faced by people with rare conditions such as Huntington’s disease and work as part of a friendly, supportive team. If you want to make a real impact on the lives of families affected by Huntington’s disease whilst developing new and existing skills, Scottish Huntington’s Association could have a role that suits you.”

Helen Maginnis

HD Specialist (2020 to 2024)

“Since joining Scottish Huntington’s Association I’ve been happy going to work each day. Staff are so welcoming and we feel like one big team, all working towards the same goal and supporting each other to reach it. I enjoy working with families and carers and helping them to feel they are not alone. In the staff at Scottish Huntington’s Association, they have someone who understands their unique circumstances. The charity makes a huge impact on their lives and I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Caitlin Daly

Financial Wellbeing Lead

“When I started in 2000 never did I think I would be here all these years later. The organisation looked very different then with a smaller HD Specialist service, no Youth Service or Financial Wellbeing Service. Over the years services have expanded and the drive from the team remains. My role is rewarding and I look forward to the future.”

Jillian Foster

National Senior HD Specialist

“Since joining the Youth Service at Scottish Huntington’s Association I’ve been welcomed with open arms by the young people, their families and colleagues across the organisation. I’ve had so many new experiences since then that it feels like I’ve been here a lot longer than I have! I’ve learned a great deal already, and I’m still learning. There is great encouragement and opportunity to continue my own development. Building positive relationships with the young people we support is very rewarding, and I look forward to building on this in the coming years.”

Kevin Dailly

Specialist Youth Advisor

“Scottish Huntington’s Association is a great place to work. The team is passionate, supportive, and dedicated to making a real difference. There’s always something being done to improve the services we provide and ensure we move with the times.”

Gregor Crawford

Digital Communications Officer

“I originally joined Scottish Huntington’s Association on a temporary contract and I have now been working with the organisation for nearly two years. During that time I have developed skills in Human Resources and IT, and am trusted to take responsibility, which is building my confidence. I feel supported and valued by my colleagues every day and it is truly inspiring to be part of a hard-working team for the Huntington’s community.”

Morgan Connelly

Administration Officer

“I started in 2003 and right away I knew I was going to love it. Little did I know that more than 20 years on I would still be learning new things every day. Most of what I have learned about Huntington’s disease over the years has come from the families themselves. Their strength, resilience and ability to laugh, even in some of the most challenging times, is truly inspiring. Confucius sums up my time at Scottish Huntington’s Association nicely in his quote ‘Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Paula McFadyen

Senior HD Specialist

“Scottish Huntington’s Association is the right place for me. Working together with such a warm, kind, and hard-working group of people and the chance to support an incredibly important cause is very enriching and inspiring. As making a difference is important to me, I am proud to be part of it.”

Barbara Duszkiewicz

Finance Officer

People impacted by Huntington’s disease need specialist services to cope with a severe and complex disease, the impact on families and a lack of awareness amongst health and social care providers and the wider public.

Scottish Huntington’s Association is the only charity in the country exclusively dedicated to providing expert and personalised support for those impacted by Huntington’s disease.

Our support reduces unnecessary hospital admissions; supports carers and other family members; lowers household poverty; and alleviates wellbeing risks to children and young people living in Huntington’s families.

We are commissioned by NHS Boards and Health and Social Care Partnerships throughout the country to share our expertise with front line staff and build support for improved services and higher standards of care for every family impacted by this devastating disease.

Scottish Huntington’s Association is committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment.

Huntington’s disease is caused by an inherited faulty gene that damages the brain over time. People with the disease can eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink and care for themselves, requiring specialist support from those who understand the condition.

The disease is genetic, meaning it is passed down from one generation to the next. It therefore impacts entire families over generations rather than individuals alone. Anyone with a parent who has Huntington’s has a 50% risk of inheriting the condition from them.

Around 800 people in Scotland are living with the symptoms of Huntington’s disease right now. A further 3,200 are estimated to be at risk of developing Huntington’s disease as a result of inheriting the faulty gene.
