Geoff sets off on 3800 mile ride across America in support of Huntington’s families

Our supporters do really amazing things – including new volunteer fundraiser Geoff Cooper who is all set to cycle across America in aid of Scottish Huntington’s Association.

It is the first time in the charity’s history that anyone has taken on such a challenge.

A keen cyclist for the past decade, Geoff, 62, began racking up to 50 miles per day soon after retirement from his business career as a McDonald’s Restaurant franchisee.

Now that pedalling passion is being put into action on an epic 48-day, 3800-mile cycle in support of Scotland’s Huntington’s community, including his brother’s family.

“It began when I was still working because cycling is so good for physical and mental wellbeing. After retirement I just cycled more and more. I cycle over 18,000 miles a year which is more than Arlene, my wife and I drive in our cars,” said Geoff, who lives in Aberdeenshire and recently became a grandad.

“My brother’s late wife Elaine had Huntington’s. We didn’t know anything about the disease before then, although we knew her mum had a neurological condition. It was devastating and a big shock. Then we realised the implications for my brother’s family and the next generation.

“It was hard to see Elaine becoming more and more unwell during the last few years. I think maybe some of their friends distanced themselves as it became harder for her to communicate. Elaine knew what she wanted to say, she just couldn’t say it. Their lives changed so much and, you know, I just feel that if there’s anything I can do to help, I want to try.”

On Thursday 20 August, Geoff will set off on the west coast from Portland, Oregon after dipping his bike in the Pacific Ocean. He will head for the east coast finish nearly 4000 miles away in Portland, Maine, reaching his destination on 6 October. There he will mark the moment by dunking his bike again – this time in the Atlantic.

The organised trip led by experienced guides will pass through 15 states – Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Along the way, Geoff will:

  • Climb a total of 155,100 feet
  • Cross four time zones
  • Cycle an average of 86 miles a day
  • Take only four rest days
  • Pass numerous landmarks and sites including Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, the Jolly Green Giant statue, Ohio’s Amish region, and the White Mountains.
  • Scale the highest point of the ride (9430ft) at Observation Point in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest

“When it comes to my love of cycling, Arlene is very supportive and is pleased I’m doing the American coast to coast challenge for such a good cause. She doesn’t really like to fly so will be cheering me on from home, as will our two daughters,” said Geoff.

And while he has stepped back from his career, Geoff is still using his business background to make the most of every fundraising opportunity.

“I’m packing a load of Scottish Huntington’s Association wristbands to raise awareness and encourage donations from the other 24 cyclists on the trip and anyone else I meet on the way,” he said.

We will be checking in with Geoff throughout his incredible journey and sharing milestone moments on our social media channel and website. In the meantime, you can show your support by donating to his JustGiving page at Geoff Cooper is fundraising for Scottish Huntington’s Association
