SHAYP Services
Scottish Huntington's Association Youth Service (SHAYP) provides support to young people aged 8-25 living in a family impacted by Huntington's disease (HD). If you are worried about Juvenile Huntington's disease (JHD) please contact your local HD Specialist.
There are lots of different ways you can be involved with SHAYP.
Click the services below to find out more about them.
1 To 1 Sessions
One of the SHAYP team will meet with you and provide support, information and advice on living in a HD family. You might want to learn more about HD; maybe you are finding it hard to cope with changes at home; you might be considering genetic testing; or want to be able care for your family member better. Whatever topic you would like to discuss, your SHAYP advisor will support you.
What you chat about in these visits is private and confidential between you and your SHAYP advisor. SHAYP staff will not tell anyone else what is discussed (even your parents) unless you give permission, or you are at risk.

Group Sessions
Would you like to learn more about HD? Would you like to meet other young people living in a HD family? Would you like a break away from home?
SHAYP groups are for ages 8-12 and 13-17 and are held in February, April and October.
The groups are a great way to meet other people who understand what living in a HD family is like, as well as teaching you more about HD in a fun and relaxed way.
Don’t be nervous about joining us for the first time- the groups are really friendly.

Activity Days
SHAYP offers fun-filled activity days throughout the year.
These are a fabulous way to come along to a group, meet other young people growing up a HD family and have fun trying different activities.
Over the years we’ve tried lots of activities- ice skating, trampolining, white water rafting, go-karting, chocolate workshops, science centre, mini golf, climbing, cinema…..we’re willing to give most things a try.
These days out are great and allow you to have a break from home and try something new

Residential Breaks
The highlight of SHAYP’s year is Summer Camp. This takes place in July each year at Lagganlia Outdoor Education Centre, near Aviemore.
50 young people join SHAYP for 5 days of fun, festivities and take part in activities such as gorge walking, archery, abseiling, biking, climbing, kayaking…..to name but a few of the day activities. We then do even more activities at night, such as swimming, games night and party night.
Those age 1st year and older also take part in our HD Festival, which looks at a particular HD topic.
This a brilliant week away and the according to SHAYP young people “the best thing ever!”
Camp is also free of charge.
