Charity bowled over by support from Vale of Leven race goers

Runners and riders were under starters orders at Vale of Leven Bowling Club in a race to raise £2000 to help people living with an incurable neurological condition.

Around 100 people gathered to place their bets at a Race Night in aid of Scottish Huntington’s Association, the only charity in the country supporting families impacted by the degenerative condition Huntington’s disease (HD).

Organised by local man Kenny Crichton, whose wife Lorraine lives with the condition, the night featured traditional horse races and also a Huntington’s Hounds dash where competitors tried their luck with a roll of the dice to see who wins the race.

‘We are so grateful to Kenny for organising this event and the fantastic support from everyone who came along on the night. Every penny will got towards improving the lives of people living with HD,’ said SHA community fundraiser, Gemma Powell.

SHA supports HD families through a national network of specialists, a world leading youth support team and its financial wellbeing service.

‘We really appreciate the support we get from the SHA so it nice to put something back,’ said Kenny.

HD is a complex condition with symptoms that typically begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50. It causes three main groups of symptoms: changes to thinking processes – a type of early onset dementia, loss of muscle control and involuntary movements which lead to loss of speech and swallow along with mental illness. Those impacted by HD may lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or make decisions and will eventually need 24 hour care. It is also hereditary with each child of those diagnosed at 50% risk developing the disease. There is currently no cure.

It is estimated there are around 1100 people living with HD in Scotland and up to 6000 potentially at risk.

‘We run a range of fundraising events over the year and are always on the lookout for new volunteers to help us help people with HD,’ said Gemma.
