Welcome to our second Annual Writing Competition – Writing About HD: The Light Beyond the Shadow. We are so thrilled to be partnering with former Edinburgh Makar, the Scottish Rivers’ poet, Valerie Gillies, as we move into a new year and a new theme. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a neurological condition that is still hidden from many and this year we want to use the power of poetry to look beyond the shadow. We are inviting poets from across Scotland and beyond to submit their work. The competition this year will open on Friday 1st September 2017, so you have plenty of time to get your quills and nibs sharpened.

We will accept any form of poetry, from haiku to iambic pentameter to free verse, as long as it’s about Huntington’s disease. Each poem should be no more than 24 lines. The competition will be judged by Valerie Gillies and prizes presented to three talented poets at the winners’ event in December 2017.

“Poetry is such an expressive medium and I’m really looking forward to learning more about HD through this powerful form” said Valerie.
