CASESTUDY – Andy & Willie
“I really enjoy the friendship and the banter too of course!”
Wellbeing Volunteer Andy had been supporting HD family member Willie for around a year now and the volunteering partnership has been going from strength to strength.
Willy greatly appreciates being able to get out and about knowing that Andy understands HD and at least some of the challenges Willie faces. It also means that Willie’s wife is able to have some valued time for herself.
“It’s good to get out, even when sometimes you don’t feel like it at first – it keeps my drive going” Willie says.
Andy is a semi-retired engineer and ex-serviceman who really enjoys his trips out with Willie. To Andy, it’s more than volunteering – it’s an opportunity to have some quality time with someone with whom he has much in common.
As a Wellbeing Volunteer, Andy also gets a lot out of it-
“It’s not just about giving something back – it’s a two way process and a partnership. We never run out of things to talk about as it’s such a good match”.
